Why is it unsafe to throw away batteries?
I read that it is unsafe to throw away batteries… is this true? if so, why?
Many batteries contain mercury, cadmium, or other unfriendly chemicals. Some of which could rupture and spray on unsuspecting trash collectors, if crushed while being loaded and compressed in a garbage truck.
These should not be incinerated or buried either, but rather “reclaimed”. Many municipal landfills or transfer stations have a hazardous waste depot, where paint, batteries, bleach, etc can be taken for proper processing.
