Why can’t the rechargeable AA or AAA batteries be made to 1.5V? Is it that there is no technology to do so?
I have an Olympus Digital Voice Recorder WS-320M that recently starts to deplete the charge of 1.5V AAA alkaline batteries within 30 minutes. I tried to use fully charged Energizer rechargeable AAA (850mAh) batteries but the recorder showed “low battery” and refused to work. The charged batteries could only attain 1.3V to 1.4V level.
Electrical charge is generated by the chemical action between two different metals in an electrolytic solution. The composition of rechargeable batteries is different than the use-once batteries, and so the voltage potential is a little different.
I’ve noticed comments in other forums that the Olympus Digital Voice Recorders are having problems with rechargeable batteries. Even fully charged batteries still indicate a ‘low battery’ status on the Olympics. And 1.5v alkalines also don’t last long before getting the same indication.
It seems that the Olympus has a very high-limit definition for ‘weak’ batteries. It’s a design flaw that Olympus really needs to address.
