Super Drive
I have a mac book pro with Super drive. How do I make a copy of a DVD?
I don’t get it. They show you how to transfer files or movies ALREADY on your hard drive to the Superdrive, but nowhere does it tell you how to make a copy of an existing DVD… help!! Do I need special software to do this???
They show you how to burn files already on your hard drive because they assume it’s your own content, i.e. you’re the copyright holder. The reason they don’t show you how to make copies of existing DVDs is because it’s illegal to do so. Now, I’m against copyright infringement and illegal distribution of copyrighted material BUT the way I see it is, if you’ve legally bought DVDs, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be allowed to back them up.
In answer to your question, you’ll need to download an application to rip the DVD and then you can back it up by storing it on an external hard drive or burning it to a blank DVD disc.
There are a few applications that do the job reasonably well, but I would suggest you download MacTheRipper. MTR is free, and has been specifically designed for backing up legally purchased DVDs.
