southern batteries
What is the best way to store a car battery? Is there any reason why I can’t keep it on a shelf in the garage?
(I live in Southern California, so the weather doesn’t get too cold, if that makes any difference.)
Being in warm California does help because eventually it will self-discharge and be more susceptible to freezing. Then when it cracked open you would have acid spilling off the shelf.
If you tried to keep it charged (which is necessary to keep sulfation from ruining its internal plates) then you would have acid fumes corroding things in garage.
Plus there is always the possibility that it will get knocked off the shelf and break open on the floor splashing acid all over the legs of whoever bumped into it.
If you don’t need it give it away or recycle it – otherwise it is a future disaster.
