sky digital cards free
My Skydigibox doesn,t work anymore according to my repair person I called, can I buy any digital box?
My old digital box does not work anymore, can I buy any brand of digibox to use and still recieve sky free channels with my card as I do with my old box. The repair said I can, simply plug it in and start using. Is this correct?
You will need a Sky branded box to view the channels that need a card, even the free ones. There’s a difference between the free channels that you don’t pay a subscription for and the FTA (free-to-air) ones. Some of the free channels are still encrypted with VideoGuard and these need a Sky Digibox with a card to watch them. The FTA channels are broadcast clean and without encryption, so you don’t need a card. These are the channels that will work on an unbranded/non-Sky satellite box. The other free channels that still have the encryption will need a Sky box with card. You can tell which channels are encrypted by pulling the card out when it’s on – the channels that say “Please insert your Sky viewing card” are the encrypted ones and the channels that carry on showing are the clean ones.
Your best bet is to buy a Sky Digibox from eBay or somewhere and put your existing card into that. When you switch it on it will say that it’s the incorrect card for the box, so you call Sky and get them to link your new box with card. This is done over the phone in a couple of minutes and once it’s done it will work as normal.
