Sultan Battery, An Amazing Construction
Sultan Battery in Mangalore is a watchtower constructed by the ruler Tippu Sultan to monitor and regulate the access of warships to the River Gurpur. Its design is amazing even to the modern observer and although its primary function was that of a watchtower, it resembles a miniature fortress with its many cannon positions facing directions all around the building.
Located in the Boloor area the building was constructed in black stone; however it was not robust enough to withstand the harsh elements and has deteriorated although it remains an impressive sight even today.
The Sultan Battery inherits a colourful and eventful history. The invader Haider Ali wrested control of Mangalore in the year 1763 AD, and created an arsenal and dockyard at the town. The well reinforced town enabled Haider to attack British shipping on the Arabian Sea. In 1766 Mangalore was captured by the British; however almost immediately Tippu Sultan made a sudden assault on the British positions and recaptured the city.
However the British warships remained a constant threat and Mangalore was continually besieged by the British who had easy access to the city through the River Gurpur. East India Company ships carrying British soldiers were an incessant menace to the city. The Sultan Battery was constructed to create a fortification to protect this vital route from the British.
An underground chamber was created at the battery as a secure dry area to stockpile gunpowder. Rumour has it that a secret underground passageway leads from the underground chamber to Tippu Sultan’s capital Sri Rangapattana.
The visitor who ascends the stairs of the tower can experience a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea, which is sure to amaze and delight the beholder. The traveler will also enjoy the refreshing sea breeze of the area.
