Can a sealed Lead Acid Battery (SLA) be placed inside a car ?
I would like to add a small 2A 12V SLA BATTERY under my car’s dash to power a small device. I read various web pages and it seems SLA batteries are not 100% sealed – they have vents to allow hydrogen to escape for safety. Could this be an issue if an SLA battery is mounted inside the car’s interior or is the vents only used for when the battery is overcharged ? I’m thinking of when the car is parked in the sun or at the airport for 5 days – when you open the door, will you smell gas etc. ?
SLA batteries are designed not to outgas during normal charging. Once the battery is fully charged, the chemical reaction changes and continued charging causes excessive gas production that makes venting necessary. If you have a good smart charger, it won’t overcharge the battery and outgassing should not occur.
If you are discharging the battery during the 5 days, and not charging it, outgassing isn’t an issue.
Hydrogen gas purportedly is colorless and odorless, so you wouldn’t smell it anyway. It is less dense than the other components of air, so I would expect it to quickly escape once you opened the car door.
Perhaps a chemist could weigh in on how much hydrogen gas theoretically could be generated during overcharging. Any takers?
