The Ultra II and Extreme III are both part of SanDisk’s higher-end CompactFlash card series. The main difference between them is the speed in which they can be written to or read from.
The kicker here is that the only thing that writes to them (99.44% of the time) is your camera. Most camera’s–even some high-end pro-series dSLRs–can’t write to them as fast as they can handle. As such, the only time that you’d see a speed increase is when downloading, and only if you’re using a downloader that can run at those speeds.
The SanDisk Extreme III reader (found at places like Best Buy now-adays) can take advantage of the speeds–provided that your PC’s USB interface can handle it.
You do get one advantage when you buy an Extreme III CF card: it comes with an image rescue program, which comes in handy if you delete a photo or format accidentally. You can actually get most if not all of the photos back.
And if you’re one of those that download via the camera… stop. It wastes your camera’s batteries and is one of the slowest ways to download. Get a decent USB 2.0 reader (or, heck, a cheap USB 1.1 reader) and you’ll see a really big decrease in download times.
