The polymer membranes are already an essential component of lithium ion batteries

With recent advances in the technology of portable electronic devices, there is a demand for flexible batteries to power them. Drs Hiroyuki Nishide, Hiroaki Konishi and Takeo Suga at Waseda University have designed the  IBM T60 Battery  – which consists of a redox-active organic polymer film around 200 nanometres thick. Nitroxide radical groups are attached, which act as charge carriers.

Plug-in hybrids run on an electric motor powered by a massive battery recharged from a wall out-let or a small engine aboard the vehicle. The engine is used only for recharging the battery.

Let’s just hope that Seidio and other third-party Dell Inspiron 1300 Battery makers give Bold 9000 owners a break and sell new, 9700-compatible extended battery covers separately, so we can employ our existing oversized Bold batteries without purchasing new battery sets with power-packs and covers.

“We have been testing the capabilities of springs [that are] several millimeters long and comprised of between 1 [million] and 10 million carbon nanotubes,” said Carol Livermore, an engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “So far our energy per unit weight is far ahead of steel springs, but we still have a ways to go to before they have energy densities comparable to those of batteries.”

In the article, C&EN Senior Editor Alexander H. Tullo notes that polymer membranes are already an essential component of lithium ion Sony VGP-BPS2 Battery  that power iPods, laptop computers, and other portable electronic devices. These porous, hair-thin separators control the flow of electrons through the battery. Their failure can result in overheating and even fires. Such problems have recently prompted the widespread recall of millions of lithium ion batteries.
