How to compare BATTERIES: Energizer, Duracell, etc.?
How can I find out the milliamp-hour ratings on common batteries (size AAA through size D) among common brands? They purposely do not put the milliampere-hour ratings on most of them to keep us from comparing.
If there is not a website with this info, is there a way to *quickly* measure it, i.e., without hooking it up and watching it drain for however long it takes?
If that is not a way to approach it, can you tell me, is there a common range that these batteries all fall into with little variation, e.g., are all size AA running close to a rechargeable that actually publicizes that it has 2650 ma-h’s? Ball-park is close enough.
I suspect, though, that cheap batteries are far lower than expensive ones in this metric.

You could find the mah ratings of AA alkalines if you tried a little harder. It’s around 2300 mah. But don’t let that fool you. Alkalines cannot put out near the amperes that NiMH can, for example. It has to do with discharge RATES. You would think that an alkaline AA at 2300 mah would be the same as a 2300 mah NiMH rechargeable, wouldn’t you? Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Alkaline falls flat on it’s face during high discharge rates (approaching 1 amp, like in a digital camera, for example) due to a chemical reaction that raises the internal resistance of the cell. Nimh, on the other hand, is able to provide higher discharge currents at higher rates than alkaline due to chemical properties that allow a much lower internal resistance during high currents. If you really want to be impressed with very high discharge rates, investigate lithium cells. They are truly remarkable. They will permit over 5 times the discharge capacity of an alkaline. In fact, they blow away NiMH. I would love to give you links to the sites where I learned this stuff, but it would take all the fun out of it for you. I’ll give you a tip…. search AA cell internal resistance discharge rates and marvel at the numerous hits you get.
