Already identified as the eco-friendly car, these latest hybrid cars that operate on the principle of “plug-in to refill” are undoubtedly the most advanced idea yet. The economic savings against the seemingly ever rising cost of gas, should amount to thousands of dollars throughout the normal lifespan of the average car. Today, these plug-in hybrids are not yet obtainable in the public marketplace. Currently, standard hybrid cars are only real choice available to members of the car buying public looking for the low cost alternative to gas guzzlers. Plans are however in place, from the likes of general Motors and other large manufacturers to have plug-in hybrid car models available on the open market around 2009 and 2010. It therefore makes good sense to find out about their potential now.
The concept of a hybrid car is almost as old as the idea of the motorcar itself. Lohner-Porsche produced designs for a hybrid car as far back as 1899, which included recharging by external means.
Much later, in 1969, a general motors concept car was featured in the magazine Popular Science. The July issue of that year revealed the General Motors XP-883 plug-in hybrid car, where main motive power came from six 12-volt lead batteries located in the rear of the car. Although the range was somewhat limited, recharging was to be achieved by plugging in to a standard 110volt socket and thus the fuel tank only needed to carry about 10 litres of gasoline.
35 years later, the California Cars Initiative came up with the Toyota Prius Plus hybrid car model. Unfortunately the ‘plus’ was actually a negative, as to obtain the advantages of a hybrid car the designers appeared to simply load it with the additional burden of 130 kg of lead-acid batteries!
It appears that the Ford Motor Company plans to enter the undoubted growing requirement for hybrid cars over the next five to ten years. Developments in this area depend hugely on the engineers’ ability to develop improvements in lithium ion battery technology. Your choice is therefore becoming clearer. If you are looking to the new hybrid breed of car, do you wish to stay ahead of the Pack? The emerging plug-in hybrid car will astound your friends. Where a standard hybrid car still requires frequent stops at gasoline stations, the true plug-in hybrid car will allow you to sail past them without a thought for the latest gas price increase.
The world is not simply holding its breath waiting for plug-in hybrid cars to hit the dealers showroom floor. Newspapers, radio, television and the internet all carry stories daily on how the hybrid car is being developed. This general groundswell of interest plus all the environmental factors that now play a bigger part of our lives are ensuring that hybrid car development will continue apace. Auto manufacturers are significantly increasing their investment in the hybrid car concept and the advances they are achieving are outstanding.
It is very difficult to establish the likely demand for hybrid cars in the global automobile market. Some published figures are unbelievably high but the potential is clearly enormous and pressure from politicians, environmentalists and anybody that cares for the Planet will continue to grow. Even now, a predicted production figure of one million hybrid cars per year by 2010 seems rather on the low side. That demand will undoubtedly grow even more once the true plug-in hybrid car that needs no gasoline at all comes on stream in large numbers.
There are people that are still sceptical about the true plug-in hybrid car that only runs on electricity ever really being developed to the point of convenience and ease that current non hybrids enjoy. The rate of current development of both standard hybrid cars and the still emerging plug-in hybrid car would suggest that near-future achievements in the field could be nothing less than awesome. It appears that even Daimler Chrysler is working on small plug-in hybrid trucks that travel approximately 30 miles between plug-in recharges. Be prepared. The future is nearly here; the future is the plug-in hybrid car.
