Why doesn’t the Toyota Prius use a Lithium-Ion battery instead of a nickel metal hydride one?
The current implementations of Li-ION technology available (at least at the costs and scales of production Toyota will need) are too short-lasting (think of laptop and mobile phone batteries that need replacing after 3 years) and/or have difficulties in maintaining chemical stability (think of the recent problems with laptop batteries that caught fire – and that’s in an implementation that’s not expected to undergo a crash test).
Lithium is an very chemically reactive element – pure Lithium burns with a flame in water. This reactivity is one thing that allows a lithium-based battery to have its high energy density, but it also makes it important to have it properly contained and controlled – many lithium ion based batteries can and do spontaneously catch fire or explode when allowed to overcharge, and are thus supplied only as complete packages with an electronic safety circuit to prevent overcharge.
