Hard Drive
How can I backup my exisiting hard drive to transfer it to a external, then onto a new hard drive?
My current 20 gb hard drive is failing in my tower. I want to replace it, but I want to first copy off all my data as it is (since I have everything setup the way I want all updates etc) onto an external drive, then install the new drive and copy all the data back on to it. Please help as to how to and what software to use. Thanks!
You will need an “image” program such as Norton Ghost or Drive Image. When you run them, they will make a compressed file that has everything from your current hard drive on the external hard drive. You then use that file to set up the new hard drive to be an exact copy of the original.
Or, you can skip the whole eternal drive thing. Simply plug the new hard drive in to the current PC as a second drive. Then run the software and tell it to “clone” the drive. It will make a perfect sopy of the original hard on the new one. Then just replace the original drive with the new one.
But you need an “image” software to do that. Windows does not include that feature.
