s10 blazer starter dead can i put in a 4.3?
okay, so i have an 89 s10 blazer with the itty bitty 2.8 v6. currently thats not the problem lol but a couple dayz ago key turned and it would just click once.thats it. no turnover, nothing. i cleaned the cables swapped batteries and checked the frame ground etc. im afraid its just dead (unless one of ya has another idea? plz let me know! tis greatly appreciated!!) I dont wanna buy factory direct (I work at a movie theatre 4 gods sake lol) so I checked ebay! unfortunatly I only found starters for the 4.3 motor? now I was wondering if I could just use one of those? im guessing not but Ive discovered that these two motors have a lot in common so i was hopin maybe? also, thats all thats wrong the blazer runs just fine ive just had to bump it 2 get to work lol thanx so much everyone!!
Well, I’m not real sure what you mean by “bump it”. If you mean the starter works when you smack it, then the starter is definitely going bad. If however you mean you have started it with a jump, or by push starting it, then you could have another problem. But it does sound like you’ve covered the bases pretty well, as far as other possible causes. If it still doesn’t work with a good substitute battery, you can pretty well rule out a bad battery or alternator.
As far as using a 4.3L starter, the 2.8L motor is actually quite different in many ways than the 4.3L. The 2.8L is basically a clean sheet, ground up design, with a 60 degree relationship between the cylinder banks. The 4.3L on the other hand, is basically a small block V8 with 2 of the cylinders sliced out (#3 + #6), and both of those have a 90 degree cylinder bank separation. The starters are not interchangeable.
Autozone does list a starter for your truck, available for as low as $50, and I would highly recommend that over e-bay. The only reason Autozone doesn’t allow unrestricted returns on electrical devices is the same reason as everyone else. It keeps people from putting in a starter just to diagnose whether that’s the problem or not, and bringing it back when it doesn’t fix the problem.
Parts stores wouldn’t have to worry about this if the average person had the know-how and equipment to properly diagnose electrical problems. A voltage drop test and a check with an Ammeter could easily confirm if the starter is the problem in a case like this. You can hardly expect a store to supply free use of a starter to diagnose the problem.
Short of a proper diagnosis in the vehicle, you can always have the starter bench tested at most any store if you take it out. Many backyard mechanics who don’t have the knowledge or equipment to check the system as a whole do basically the same thing with a good battery and a pair of jumper cables.
