How does the trash I throw away hurts the environment?
I never recycle. I throw away paper, soda cans, water bottles, and batteries. I use disposable plates, cups, and silverware. When I bake stuff in the over, I use these aluminum pans that is used just once and then you toss them in the trash. I hate washing dishes Sometimes I toss out 5 or 6 bags of trash a week. I don’t think that the trash I throw away is going to harm the environment.
This is why you should. All that trash you throw away goes to landfills. Landfills have large number of adverse impacts occur from landfill operations. These impacts can vary: fatal accidents (e.g., scavengers buried under waste piles); infrastructure damage (e.g., damage to access roads by heavy vehicles); pollution of the local environment (such as contamination of groundwater and/or aquifers by leakage and residual soil contamination during landfill usage, as well as after landfill closure); off gassing of methane generated by decaying organic wastes (methane is a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide, and can itself be a danger to inhabitants of an area); harboring of disease vectors such as rats and flies, particularly from improperly operated landfills, which are common in Third-world countries; injuries to wildlife; and simple nuisance problems (e.g., dust, odor, vermin, or noise pollution). Also some local authorities have found it difficult to locate new landfills.
This is how long it takes for these products to decompose, remember it only takes one day to use these items:
Tin can: 80-100 Years
Aluminum can: 200-400 years
Plastic soda bottles: 5–10 years
Plastic bags: 10–30 years
Polystyrene chip wrapping: 90 years
Six pack bottle wrapping: 450 years
Glass bottles: 1 million years
Since the first Earth Day in 1970, 2.3 trillion beverage containers have been wasted (landfilled, littered or incinerated) in the United States. This includes:
•961 billion wasted aluminum beverage cans weighing about 17 million tons
•324 billion wasted steel beverage cans weighing about 28 million tons
•276 billion wasted PET plastic beverage bottles weighing about 11 million tons
•190 billion wasted HDPE plastic beverage bottles weighing about 12 million tons
•600 billion wasted one-way glass beverage bottles weighing about 166 million tons
Recycling involves processing used materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land-filling) by reducing the need for “conventional” waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key component of modern waste management and is the third component of the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” waste hierarchy.
