Could my xD digital memory card be going bad?
When I am viewing my pictures on the computer from the card I am finding some that appear with large bands of red or blue across the image leaving about an inch of the original photo untouched.(I don’t have such ‘options’ to do this from the camera). This has never happened before, and there is no pattern to which photos or in some order- it’s random. So far about 6 of 175 photos are color-banded. Could this be my memory card? It is about 3 years old.
3 years is very old for one of these cards. Usually they don’t start going bad they just quit. I’d suggest replacing it.
Also you may want to try uploading rather than viewing from the card. These devices are not designed to be storage devices and can fail if used that way.
The best way to handle these cards is to upload after every shoot. Once you’re sure you have everything, format the card in the camera and start again. This will help keep your card “healthy” for it’s life and working properly.
Also, I carry 3 cards in my bag always – if one goes on a shoot I always have a backup. You may also want to consider high speed cards. These devices allow more shots quickly because they record so quickly. Also consider, whey you buy new cards, get smaller ones rather than larger.
Smaller cards perform better when loaded up with photos because you’re using the card’s capacity rather than just a small part of it. Don’t ask, I don’t know, but it seems to work. I carry nothing over 4gb.
