Why does my 1998 Accord keep shutting off?
It is a 4 cyl automatic. While driving it will completely shut down as if there is no key in the ignition. I’ll stop, restart and contintue driving like nothing happened. Sometimes, it will shut off then catch itsself. Yesterday it was extremely hot outside and the car would turn over fine but when I would go into gear it would shut down. The cruise control also will sometimes not hold the cruise speed. Sometimes it will. One more detailed example: today I’m driving along at approx 45mph and it shuts off. Dash lights are completely off as if theres no key in the ignition. Dash clock works fine. Once I coast to a stop, the battery, oil, green key lights all come on and it beeps as if I just inserted the key. I crank, drive off like nothing happened.
Sounds like the ignition switch is failing. if everything except the clock turns off it usually means that power is still coming from the battery. next time, just to be sure, if possible drive it with one of the dome lights on or any other feature that can be used without the key. If it turns completely off before everything comes back on it would most likely be your ignition switch.

As to bella767676′s answer, the ignition lock and the actual ignition switch are to different parts and although they are connected to one another, the ignition switch is attached to the rear of the ignition lock and has no interaction with the key itself. A worn down ignition lock, no matter worn the pins, should have no affect on the electrical workings of the car. Even if your thinking of that the tumbler becomes loose and the key turns back own, it’s own that wouldn’t be the case. With the key in, the tumbler should normally have a free range of motion and should not stick to any points other than it’s beginning point and ending point. The ignition switch provides the positions you would feel while turning the key, and unless the ignition switch was broken or worn the key should not turn out of these positions alone. The ignition switch is a pivoting switch, much like the headlight switch on most cars. If turn enough the contacts in the switch can wear down to the point were they can have difficulty conducting electricity and may cause a variety of symptoms, including randomly loosing connection do to bumps and vibrations. Some times these connections can also burn, do to electrical shorts, preventing them from working properly.
