Could a faulty fan be the source of an coolant leak?
I have a 2003 Grand Am.(V8) I recently had a fuel pump replaced by Carquest. After I picked my car up and drove it back home. I left the car running for a about 25 minutes cause I had to leave and I was having battery problems. So I come back out and discover a big puddle of leaked Anti-freeze on the ground. I explained what had happened to the mechanics at Carquest and they offered to take a look at it. They checked the for leaks but couldn’t find any. They also suggested my fan could be having problems. That if my fan was going out it would of course cause the car to become hot. But would that cause the coolant to leak out?
oops sorry. i meant V6.
Well, I suppose, but that would be rare. It could be that the overflow was filled too much, above the normal level, and then, when the radiator overflowed into the overflow cannister, the cannister then overlfowed.
The sytsem is designed to send antifreeze to the overflow cannister, whenever the engine gets hot, because the water boils and expands. The cannister holds it until the engine cools down, at which point, it is suckd back into the radiator by the vacuum caused by the cooling down.
Therefore, the cannister cannot be over full when it is cold, because the hot water will fill it up even more and it will over flow.

I would check the fan belt to see if it is loose, and also see if the fan is turning when the engine is runng.. With some fan action, meaning that the fan is turning, I don’t see how it could get that hot. If the belt is loose, tighten it up and try running the car again, for 25 minutes at idle. See if it repeats itself.
So check the fluid level, should be down at the Cold indicator when cold, not full. When it gets hot, it will raise up. that could be part of the problem, is it is too high to begin with.
Second, check the fan belt, and also make sure the fan is turning, and speeds up when the car does.
And watch the temperature gauge, if you have one. If it gets hot, then you do have a problem.
———–a side note…
If the fan is a clutch fan, it could be slipping, but surely not enough to over heat the engine to the point of dumping a lot of fluid, at least more then normal.
