Can a salvaged car get a tire alignment?
I have a 99 Ford Escort that I bought salvaged 3 years ago. Before any remarks, I know it was a stupid decision, but I only paid 1500 for it and so far I’ve gotten 3 years and 50000 miles out of it with minimum repairs (standard oil change, new tires, wheel bearing, new battery, tire rods). All in all, I’ve put about 400 extra into it and it is still going.
Long story short, the whole front end was damaged and I know the frame is out of whack. Can I still get an alignment, or do you think this will cause the mechanic not to be able to do it? I’m asking, cause i don’t want to go there and have them suggest i get something done that I don’t really need (i.e., complete frame re-work in order to get an alignment, when I can really get an alignment and they just want the extra $$$). Does that make sense? I’m a woman (target #1) and I’ll admit (not to them of course) that I know nothing about cars (target #2)

First off find a reputable shop that will stand behind it’s work. Ask friends and family who they have had good luck with. Second most cars these days are usually not adjustable for camber (or caster) without installing a bushing or shim. This means if that angle is off they will try to sell you the part and labor to install. I think this is just manufacturers way to cut cost and get over on the customer. Not to say it may not be something you need, it just should be adjustable from the factory without installing parts. Also if the car had severe front end damage it may need extra attention and a very skilled tech to get it right. There really is no way to know what it will need till it gets onto the alignment machine. Not saying all this to scare you just inform. Lastly remember you don’t have to have the repair shop you initially take it to, do the work. You can always call and get a second opinion or get a second look and when getting an alignment always ask for a before and after printout with factory specs. You can see the numbers for yourself that way. You can tell where they are supposed to be. Now all that being said they may get it up there adjust the toe and give the car right back to you.
