“In electronics, we’re always trying to increase the frequency,” Palacios says, in order to make “faster and faster computers” and cellphones that can send data at higher rates, for example. “It’s very difficult to generate high frequencies above 4 or 5 gigahertz,” he says, but the new graphene technology could lead to practical systems in the 500 to 1,000 gigahertz range.

The next stage is developing more quantitative metrics. It’s one thing to “feel their pain,” so to speak. It’s quite another to be able to start saying to industry, to government and to designers in general, these are the metrics you need to think about as you design our lives tomorrow — we think aging requires a new box of tools.

The wearable blood pressure sensor was born from a collaboration called the Home Automation and Healthcare Consortium, which launched in 1995 and included several MIT faculty members and about 20 companies.

MIT has a license agreement with A123Systems, which  includes a royalty arrangement as well as shares in the company. The Institute also made a small initial investment in the company in 2001.

Finding this characteristic is a tall order. “You’re not going to have a single spectrum characteristic that gives away the identification,” Torres-Carrasquillo says. The linguistic differences between dialects of a language are often small; for example, vowel sounds in Cuban Spanish are slightly longer than those of Puerto Rican Spanish. The subtle differences between the spectral pictures of dialects are difficult to detect, especially in the milliseconds of speech used in the Laboratory experiments. “But as you look at the data” says Torres-Carrasquillo, “the differences start to pile up and you have a profile.” The Laboratory’s work to classify dialect differences, which Torres-Carrasquillo presented at a September 2008 speech communication and technology conference in Australia, may lead to the discovery of a strategy for any dialect problem – a global approach that could be exploited for various classes of dialects instead of a method that works only for specific dialects.

He explained that conventional hp HSTNN-DB31 battery alternators are designed to optimize current flow only at idle. “At every other speed they’re very suboptimal.” The new technology optimizes current flow at these other operating points resulting in higher output power and also higher efficiency.

MIT researchers have found a way to let you feel a virtual object–its shape, texture, temperature, weight and elasticity–and change its characteristics through the PHANToM haptic interface. For example, you could deform a box’s shape by poking it with your finger, and actually feel the side of the box give way. “In the same way that a video monitor displays visual or graphic information to your eyes, the haptic ‘display’ lets you feel the physical information with your finger,” said Dr. J. Kenneth Salisbury, a principal research scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. PHANToM is a desktop device that looks a bit like a desk lamp. Instead of a bulb on the end of the arm, it has either a stylus grip or a thimble for the user’s fingertip. When connected to a computer, the hp HSTNN-DB31 device works like a tactile mouse. Current PHANToM research includes getting the device to mimic the texture of sandpaper, and letting a user feel a 3-D sculpture being created onscreen. A commercial PHANToM is being manufactured by SensAble Technologies. Funding for the research is from ONR, ARPA, NASA, NIH and others.

After many hours in the lab, the students coupled a laptop donated by Dell to a much-altered exercise bike. In their design, the motion of the wheel is conveyed through a flywheel, belt and gears to a generator in the back, which charges a conventional 12-volt battery like that in a car. A charge controller regulates the electricity coming to the battery to prevent overcharging. With the aid of a 12-volt cigarette-lighter adaptor, the battery supplies electricity to the laptop, which rests on a tray atop a swiveling arm in place of the handlebars.
