A question about The Beatles Remastered Mono box set?

Do you know if this new set will be available for very long? It was just released here in the U.S. on 9-11-2009. As it is a little pricey at around $220.00, I can’t get it until a way after Christmas. But, regardless, I want this set. I have all but one of the new stereo remasters, and they are great, and I’ve heard that the mono set is remarkable. Do you have an opinion about either set? Thanks!

I have all the original vinyl, and the new remastered albums are as close as I’ve heard in a digital format. I think they sound better than some of the best bootleg vinyl to CD transfers. You will like the Mono set very much. In those early days, they only had 4 tracks or sometimes two 4 track decks slaved togeher. So once a track was bounced to add instruments, it was stuck on one track or another. When they made stereo mixes, instruments got stuck coming out one side or the other, not very natural sounding. The mono mixes had everything evenly balanced and sound much more like a modern recording. The bonus, is that the mono mixes were mixed by the Beatles themselves! They don’t always sound as polished as the George Martin supervised stereo mixes, but you get lot’s of quirky little things you don’t hear in those stereo mixes. Helter Skelter is way cool in mono, you hear what they were really going for. Tomorrow Never Knows has some cool trippy sounds that aren’t quite the same. Some guitar lines are emphasized in mono that are more subdued in stereo. You hear different laughing or talking, really fresh and fun if you are used to the stereo mixes. They are indeed limited pressings, and may already have sold out, I’m not sure. You can find them on eBay etc…but some sellers will take advantage. There are illegal sites where you can download flac files which are way better than Mp3′s, but still not as good as uncompressed CD’s. I am not saying to get them there, I’m just pointing out that they exist. I am personally waiting for them to be pressed on 180g. vinyl. On my system real records are way fatter and rich, warm and in your face than any digital medium. CDs are 16bit. To get the same fidelity as vinyl, they would have to be 700bit! Plus you get to hold the album in it’s full art glory, and the ritual of changing the record keeps you engaged in a personal experience you can never get from digital medium. It’s like comparing an electric heater to a wood stove or fire place. The analog gets deep into your bones. More endorphins. But these remasters on CD are maybe 90% of the original experience. Don’t listen to people who dis them because they have been disappointed before, and can’t be bothered to check it out. They aren’t perfect, but unless you own the original pressings in mint condition, you will be blown away. It will be like you never heard the Beatles before.
