beatles lyrics book
is this a good idea for a book?
Ok, here goes.
It’s called Lucy In The Sky With Rhinestones. I want to make up a name to keep myself safe. I’m going to choose RInga Starkey or maybe RInga Starr, possibly Rikki Starkey.
It is about a girl and mainly about girls but some boys get involved. It’s sort of Beatles oriented because one of the girls locks herself in a closet. I suppose it has a few commercial references like Coke and People Magazine. Beatles lyrics are sprinkled throughout as well as a mysterios girl named Lucy with ‘kalidescope eyes’.
Some parts of the story are written in letters but often switch to the protaginist, Althea’s point of view.
Anyway, are these wise/original ideas? Do I have to get permission from Apple Records to add lyrics? And my biggest question is does this site seem trustworthy for publishing?

Lyrics – YES you do need permission. But you do not get permission from Apple Records. You get permission from ASCAP or BMI – whichever holds the rights. And it costs money! Lots of it. That is why you seldom see lyrics in a book. The price to buy the rights is usually astronomical. I have been through it myself. It was outrageous and so I left them out. You can however use titles – which cannot be copyright. The best way to handle it is just to “assume” your readers know the lyrics. Use sentences like “She was walking down the street singing the Beatles song She Loves You”. People can fill in the words with their own imaginations. Then you are safe.
You can of course use songs in public domain – songs written before 1923, but The Beatles don’t fall into that category. Pax-C
