Why is the battery light on in my ford focus?
I have a 2003 Ford Focus LX SPI SOHC 2.0L sedan. I replaced both my battery and alternator about 2 months ago. I installed an amplifer for my sub a couple days ago. (confident with the installation). I also washed my engine too. I covered up the air filter but I guess i was supposed to cover this black box with fuses nsuch in it near the firewall. Its been fine for days after washing it and amp install. Now when I start the car the system resets every time (gauges full clockwise then back) and then I get a steady battery light on. I can turn the dome light on but then when the batt. light comes on it goes off (cant turn back on). The battery tests fine. It looks like the alternator is charging more than 15Vs. Could there be somthing up with the GEM module? The engine runs fine.
I disconnected the amp and it still does it
15 volts is too much. Charging system voltage should be between 13.5 to 14 volts while the engine is running. Sounds like your internal voltage regulator has failed. If this is an aftermarket alternator, I suggest biting the bullet, and purchasing the proper Ford/Motorcraft alternator. If it is, take it back to the dealership for a “service replacement”. Overcharging is an issue not uncommon on Focuses. Hope this helps.
