Two Other Highlights
This year’s Consumer Electronics Show saw the introduction of a variety of new or, at least, uncommon devices, such as tablet PCs, new types of e-readers and e-papers and all types of touch devices of various shapes, sizes and input capabilities. Among the devices were mini projectors, tablet PCs, smartbooks, transparent laptops, and others. One of the companies that showcased uncommon devices, and that plans to continue doing so in hopes of creating new market segments, is Lenovo (thinkpad T60 Battery). The consumer-electronics corporation is now reported to be planning the release of laptops with integrated mini projectors.
A tablet-like wireless display, with a keyboard, without a thinkpad t60 battery, possibly with screen input. What the hell is this supposed to be? Did a reporter stumble across an iMac for the first time, and decide he’d found a HOT SCOOP?
The main chink in the Medion’s armour was graphics performance. Saddled with an integrated Intel graphics chip, we saw average framerates of 6 frames per second in FEAR at Maximum quality. If you really want to play games, look for a laptop with an ATI or nVidia graphics card inside.
This is another form factor for portable computing: it’s a two-screen device (one e-Paper, one LCD) that enTourage calls a “dualbook.” It functions as an e-reader – e-readers made a huge splash at CES this year – as well as a netbook,thinkpad t61 battery , notepad and audio/video recorder and player. It lets you read e-books, search and highlight text and write in the margins. You can also use it to write by hand, type notes (using virtual keyboard), surf the Web (via built-in Wi-Fi) and check e-mail. Closed, it measures 8.25- by 10.75- by 1-inch and weighs slightly less than three pounds. It’s available in February for $490.
To do this, you’ll need the polarised glasses which thankfully come with the Lenovo(thinkpad t61 battery) thinkpad . The glasses you get when you see 3D movies using Real-D 3D technology work quite well with the Acer Aspire 5738DG when viewed in the 3D modes. So there’s your spare glasses worked out. Now you just need something to use them for.
“The farther away the client is from the base station, the more transmit power it must put out for the base station to receive or ‘hear’ it. It has to ’shout’ louder to be heard by the base station due to the increased distance,” Sweeney said. This is true for Wi-Fi as well, but in general the transmit power for a WiMax client will be higher, he said.
Obvious ones really but this tablet is going to need to be totally hands free from time to time. A 10-inch, or thereabouts, device is going to get tiring to hold for the length of an entire film, so some kind of clever kick stand or perhaps dock is going to be needed. Its omission might not be a total disaster and naturally would spring dollar signs onto the eyeballs of Belkin and Griffin and pals but having no built-in speakers might be harder to stomach.
If this thing is to be taken about the house and used in different settings, then chaining it to you ears via headphones cable would be both taxing and rather impractical, particularly if you’re trying to do the washing up while listening to Spotify at the same time, say.
There are two other highlights to lenovo(thinkpad t60 battery)’s software bundle: the eco utility and PC Health Monitor. You activate the former software by pressing the eco button above the keyboard, which looks like a little Web globe with a stem attached. Within this software you can monitor your power consumption (measured in watts) in real time, as well as toggle eco mode on and off.
Anecdotally, the T40’s rendering of maps in Google Earth was faster than what we’ve seen on other thin-and-light systems recently. It consistently took 9 seconds to get to locations we entered, and generally just 4 seconds to load 3D buildings and sharpen the maps; often, that whole process can take closer to 20 seconds.
The EC-1000W took 3 hours and 40 minutes to fully recharge its battery, using 5918.0 watts in the process. When this is divided by its battery life (to determine its Laptop Battery Efficiency Rating; lower is better), the eCAFé scored 18.4. That’s a bit above the netbook average of 16.6.
