In a two-cell flashlight, the batteries are usually connected in series. Why not connect them in parallel? What possible advantage could there be in connecting several identical batteries in parallel?
The power that both arrangements provide is the same. Either the voltage is doubled (for series) or the current capacity is doubled (for parallel). And power is voltage times current.
With the batteries in series, you get 2 x 1.5 = 3 volts. With the batteries in parallel, you get 1.5 volts, but twice the current.
The reason most flashlights are in series is simply that it makes for an easier-to-handle tube with one behind the other. There is also a small advantage in having the higher voltage in terms of overcoming minor layers of oxidation at the contacts. Because of that preference for the series arrangement, most bulbs made for flashlights have long been made for 3 volts – for the series arrangement.
With the more recent appearance of white LED flashlights, there is a new arrangement: you need three batteries in series. That is because the white LEDs used require 4 volts to operate.
