Can I charge 4 identical 115 aH deep cycle batteries with a single trickle charger?
I have wired the four batteries in parallel with #4 gauge copper terminal connectors to run my inverter. I am wondering if they discharge in parallel, can I recharge them in parallel, with with the 800micro amp trickle charger I have, or even a larger charger to recharge them quicker? And if I choose to purchase a larger marine battery deep cycle charger, what would you recommend? Thanks!
Yes.
The charger will only see one large battery when the cells are connected in parallel. So you are managing a battery of 860 A/hr and should choose a charger accordingly. For continuous charging something quality like a CTek of around 36 amps capacity will work good assuming mains power is available. For a pure RAP system a management/control unit will be needed to run the inputs from your wind, solar, hydro, alternators etc. As voltage rises the current reduces linearly so the full output is rarely applied for more than half the charge cycle, sometimes even less – a large part of charging batteries correctly is the absorption stage, just belting in the current has indifferent results and reduced battery life. Even a direct charging system run by a Diesel or petrol engine will reduce charge through the control unit as the cycle goes on.
