Rechargeable Batteries – a Green Alternative
Each of us in our own way can help the environment and prevent our planet from becoming polluted just by changing the way we carry out everyday routines and habits. There is no need for these changes to be life-changing or to cost a lot of money and effort, many of them are easy enough to facilitate. One such method, already adopted by a large number of the population worldwide is to recycle. It would mean less waste and pollution and they can be used just as easily as disposable batteries can.
As more and more batteries are used every day there is a demand for responsible and safe methods to dispose of them, or even better, to recycle. Dangerous and harmful chemicals and metals can be found in batteries, such as nickel, mercury and lead acid, and if they are thrown away with the regular trash these can have a harmful effect on our environment. Old, used batteries can poison rivers and streams. Batteries left to decay in a landfill will eventually release their noxious substances and they will seep into the surrounding soil and water supply making the soil corrode and creating grave health risks for the general public, animals and wildlife.
In most districts now local authorities provide a recycling service or a collection point where you can take your electronic waste, any used disposable batteries will be used for recycling and not dumped in a landfill to cause pollution. The old batteries are passed onto companies that strip the plastic and metal from them to reuse in the production of new batteries.
There are various points to consider when trying to recycle and reduce your household’s battery waste. Most people have spare batteries hanging around the house so always take a look first to see if you already have the type you need stored somewhere and forgotten about. Consider the item you are planning to buy and check out if they have a manual alternative where batteries won’t be needed. Batteries contain varying levels of mercury so read the label to find out the mercury content and try to buy ones with a lower amount of mercury or heavy metals.
A rechargeable battery is a much greener option than disposable batteries, mainly because they last so much longer and can be used over and over again. Compare using a rechargeable battery 300 times to having to buy 300 disposable one time use batteries. Buy rechargeable and you have limited the number of disposable batteries to be thrown away and saved yourself the cost of purchasing them.
If you do decide to buy a rechargeable battery and charger, then buy a quality one that will last for a longer period of time. Batteries are able to be recharged many times over before a replacement is needed. Savings can be huge in the long term and with no further need to rush out to the stores to get a new battery you will save yourself time and effort too.
We use so many products in our daily lives that need batteries, everything from our laptops, iPods, watches, portable stereos, mobile phones and digital cameras, to top of the range children’s toys; they all require batteries to function. Batteries are an essential in our lives and used in many products, where would be on a day to day basis without our mobile phone and wristwatch?

Rechargeable batteries last a lot longer than disposable alkaline ones and are a lot more environmentally friendly to use. Certain manufacturers claim their rechargeable batteries can last as many as 3000 charge cycles, a definite saving of money.
