what happens in transit at san francisco airport?
I am travelling from NZ to germany with a few hours stop in San Francisco where I have to change airlines from air nz to lufthansa, will i have to re check my luggage? will they make me just sit in a room for ages? will i be able to charge my computer battery up anywhere? and will there be anywhere to buy food/ coffee and maybe have a shower like at singapore?

If you bought the NZ to SF flight separate from the SF to Germany trip, then you probably will have to re check your luggage. If you booked this all together (as in you bought a NZ to Germany ticket with a plane change in SF) then you probably dont have to re check your luggage (it should automatically be placed onto your next flight or something)
You probably dont have sit in a room, just the area next to your gate. There are places to eat, get coffee, a place for you to shower (its in the international terminal, but its before security, so if you go take a shower, then you have to get in line for security screening again) There probably are places for you to charge your computer battery (you can just plug it in where ever you see a free outlet and there are computer workstations through out the airport)
