Is there battery acid in a AA Alkaline battery?

Yeah, so I busted open an Energizer AA alkaline battery and it smelled like vinegar. I wanted to take a look at the insides but the plastic wrap around the battery prevented me from doing so. I then promptly chucked it in with the rest of the hazardous waste stuff in my house. I know busting open a battery is probably stupid, but I was curious. Curious and stupid, that’s me.
If you are talking about the kind of battery acid (strong sulfuric acid) that is found in automobile lead-acid batteries the answer is definitely NO.
If you are talking about something mildly corrosive that will get in your eyes and make them sting then the answer is YES. Those batteries contain ammonium chloride or potassium hydroxide. In fact the newer stronger potassium hydroxide ones are alkaline which is the opposite of acidic.
