5 Tips To Extend The Life Of Rechargeable Batteries
If you were to compare normal batteries versus rechargeable batteries, the latter actually cost less to use. We need batteries to power all of our portable electrical devices such as laptop, cordless phone, Ipod, remote control, digital cameras etc.
One of the drawbacks of rechargeable batteries is the high cost. When it is so expensive, it makes sense to use the batteries properly so it will last for a long time.
The following is a list of 5 easy tips you can use to extend the life of NiCd or NiMh rechargeable batteries.
1) Do not overcharge – Sometimes we may get careless and leave the battery in the charger for more than a day after it has been full charged. This can be harmful to the battery. When you see the “Full” indicator on the charger, make sure you remove the battery immediately.
2) Regular full discharge cycle – When possible, discharge the battery fully at least a few times a month. To do this, all you have to do is run the battery down in the equipment until it is dead. The reason for the full discharge is to prevent the “memory effect” to set in the battery.
3) Avoid discharge before recharging – Some older types of rechargeable batteries have to be discharged fully every time before recharge. Do not do this with modern rechargeable batteries. Constant discharging will put undue stress on the battery therefore reducing its lifespan.
4) Keep the battery cool – Do not allow the battery to overheat. When charging, it should raise the temperature of the battery a little and then cool off when done charging.
Charge the battery around room temperature. Excessive heat is very dangerous because it will cause the battery to explore!
5) Use quality charger. Invest in a high quality battery charger. A battery charger should be able to charge both AA and AAA batteries simultaneously.
Get charger models with heat monitoring and automatic cut off features to prevent overcharging.
